Description:
Blues Brothers 2000 was being designed for the PlayStation by
Titus and BlueSky Software. Many concepts were brought to
the table. The first was a driving game set to the
soundtrack of the film. Cops would chase the Blues
Brothers through different locales of the film heightened with
some puzzle based gameplay. This included driving through
the mall smashing stuff, grabbing your band mates on the way to
the big show. The concept proved to be too much of a
technical challenge on the PlayStation for the time (circa
January/February 1998).
The next design
concept was an action game on a set path similar to Crash
Bandicoot. Beat bad guys and creatures along the way while
collecting band mates, songs, and stuff. Break out of
jail, go through swamps, Chicago alleys, and all the wacky PSone
kind of gameplay that we know and love. Animation tests
were created of Mighty Mack McTeer (played by John Goodman in
the movie). The animation was built without a skinned mesh
using connected pieces. (To see the difference between
this and the skinned mesh method, compare Goal Storm by Konami
and FIFA 2005 by EA Sports).
The third proposed
concept was similar to the original version of guitar heroes.
The two Blues Brothers would be on stage dancing and playing
instruments to the beat of the music. Notes scrolled down
and you hit the right button when the notes lined up and they
danced and played accordingly. Scuttlebutt has it that
demos were made but then scrapped.
Unfortunately, by
the time the license was obtained and development started, the
movie was out of the theaters. It would have been 2 years
after the movie release by the time the game could be completed.
The development team was shifted to focus on other PlayStation
titles and Blues Brothers 2000 was dropped. Ultimately
Titus decided to proceed with Blues Brothers 2000 on the
Nintendo 64 and borrowed many of the ideas from the PSone design
(Note: work was outsourced to Player1 studios).

McTeer in the action game concept.
