"The compact size and light weight of Sony's PlayStation video game system were made possible through an optical pickup that combines optical components in a single chip, thereby greatly reducing the number of components used, and a newly designed thin mechadeck."

"In December 1994, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) launched its PlayStation 32-bit CD-ROM based home video game system in Japan.  The PlayStation's stunning 3D computer graphics capabilities, which gives users an exceptionally realistic game-playing experience, have driven the system's immense popularity and generated brisk sales since its debut.  In addition to SCE-produced software, such game titles for the PlayStation as Ridge Racer from Namco Limited and Toshinden from Takara Co., Ltd., have become hits in Japan.

In overseas markets, Sony established operating bases for its video game business in North America and Europe during the year under review.  Sony has also entered into licensing agreements with a number of North American and European video game software developers.  The PlayStation is slated for release in North America and Europe in fall 1995."
